Analysis of the Relationship between the Implementation of Circular Economy Principles and Financial Inclusion to Poverty Alleviation in Indonesia

This qualitative study explores the relationship between circular economy principles, financial inclusion, and poverty alleviation in Indonesia. Through semi-structured interviews with key informants representing various stakeholders, the research investigates the integration of circular economy initiatives into financial inclusion strategies, the impact of circular economy practices on poverty alleviation, and the challenges and opportunities for sustainable development. The findings reveal potential synergies between circular economy and financial inclusion, highlighting the role of innovative financing mechanisms, capacity building, and policy reforms in promoting inclusive growth and environmental sustainability. However, significant barriers, including risk perception, collateral requirements, and regulatory constraints, pose challenges to accessing finance for circular businesses and entrepreneurs. Addressing these barriers requires collaborative efforts from policymakers, financial institutions, and other stakeholders to create an enabling environment for circular economy investments and foster inclusive development. Green HRM for Enhanced Environmental Performance: A Circular Economy Perspective Aligned with SDGs

This empirical inquiry explores the use of Green HRM as a strategic tool to improve environmental performance within the context of a circular economy. We chose 200 employees from the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) based on data from the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) index. The study employs Structural Equation Modeling-Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS 4) to examine the relationship between organizational policies and the implementation of circular economy principles within the framework of Green HRM practices. This research is supported by the circular economy, which is defined as a fundamental change in thinking that promotes the reuse of resources, reduction of waste, and efficient use of resources. The SEM-PLS 4 approach is used to validate the theoretical framework that proposes that Green HRM practices provide a significant contribution to the promotion of circular economy initiatives, which in turn lead to considerable gains in environmental performance metrics. Moreover, this method is employed to evaluate the complex causal links in action. Policymakers and business leaders may facilitate the integration of Green HRM into sustainability programs by utilizing the study's findings. It is expected that human capital management will play a crucial role in achieving the circular economy paradigm. This research not only improves our understanding of how Green HRM affects sustainability, but also provides firms with a strategic roadmap for implementing circular economy models.

Moreover, the adoption of circularity fosters a culture of preventive measures, reducing the likelihood of workplace accidents and improving overall safety standards. Furthermore, integrating circular economy principles into manufacturing operations contributes to environmental sustainability by minimizing resource depletion and pollution. Through strategies such as product redesign for recyclability, remanufacturing, and waste valorization, manufacturers can reduce their reliance on virgin materials and curb emissions. Guam and the Circular Economy: Is the Island Ready? A look at the Phase I (Discovery Phase) Results of an Organization Development Action Research Study

This study presents the preliminary findings of a Phase I, qualitative investigation into the feasibility of implementing a circular economy model in Guam, a Small Island Developing State (SIDS). The purpose of this organization development (OD) research project is to discern the level of interest and receptivity towards the concept of a circular economy in Guam's unique island setting. With 44 participants (n=44) from the local business community and the general population, this study employed interviews and focus groups as part of a qualitative research approach. The research design aimed to gather insights and perspectives on the interest in a circular economy in Guam. The findings indicate a significant level of enthusiasm and interest in the circular economy among both the local business community and the general population in Guam. Stakeholders recognize the potential economic, environmental, and social benefits associated with transitioning to a circular economy framework, as revealed through the interviews and focus groups conducted. This discovery research represents a vital first step in understanding the readiness of Guam to embark on a circular economy journey. The positive response from the participants underscores the importance of further OD research and initiatives in this direction. The study highlights the need for policymakers, businesses, and communities to collaborate and explore the implementation of circular economy principles to maximize the sustainability and resilience of Guam's economy. It also emphasizes the significance of promoting sustainable economic development in Guam and other SIDS facing similar challenges.

Identifying site-specific circularity potential in the built environment through socio-spatial visualizations

ABSTRACT This article tackles contextual challenges in spatial plans and circularity strategies in the built environment. It highlights the issue of using generic circularity toolboxes with limited consideration of site-specific contexts. To address this, the paper proposes socio-spatial visualizations as an alternative approach. Two case studies of industry parks demonstrate the effectiveness of this method. By employing socio-spatial visualizations, future design projects can better understand and integrate site-specific circularity potential, bridging the gap between generic circularity concepts and specific contexts. The aim is to facilitate the implementation of circular economy principles while addressing contextual challenges in the built environment.

Circular economy as an imperative for sustainable development

The lack of resources in the modern world necessitates the reorganisation of the conventional linear economy into a new, circular model of economic development, and this requirement is even more urgent for a country at war. The purpose of this study was to prove the necessity and possibility of achieving sustainable development goals even in a crisis, using evidence from Ukraine. Using such methods as statistical analysis, comparison, and synthesis, the dynamics of sustainable development in the European Union and Ukraine were investigated. In addition, relevant experts were interviewed via an online survey. The study obtained and analysed statistics on the transition of European countries to clean energy sources, conducted a detailed investigation of the current legislative framework and state institutions of Ukraine related to recycling war waste, strengthening the digitalisation of Ukrainian society, and studied wartime circular recycling measures. Statistics on the factual destruction and pollution of the environment as a result of hostilities and the temporary occupation of some territories were also examined. Furthermore, information was collected and systematised from the management of Ukrainian manufacturing enterprises on the factual implementation of circular economy principles during the war. The analysis of the data obtained led to the conclusion that the crisis only increases the need to save resources. The practical significance of the study lies in proving that there is no alternative to the goals of sustainable development in the future and emphasising Ukraine’s competitive advantages in this area during the post-war reconstruction. These proposals will be useful for private investors who can profitably finance Ukraine’s future recovery in line with the principles of the circular economy

Biosorption of Technologically Valuable Metal Ions on Algae Wastes: Laboratory Studies and Applicability

In the context of a circular economy that recommends the most efficient use of wastes, algae wastes have a huge potential for valorization. In this study, algae wastes obtained after the alkaline extraction of active compounds from two types of marine algae (green algae—Ulva sp. and red algae—Callithamnion sp.) were used as biosorbents to remove metal ions from aqueous effluents. The efficiency of these biosorbents was tested for Zn(II), Cu(II), and Co(II) ions, considered technologically valuable metal ions. The batch monocomponent experiments performed under optimal conditions (pH = 5.0; 4.0 g biosorbent/L; 22 ± 1 °C) showed that more than 75% of the metal ions were removed when their initial concentration was less than 1.25 mmol/L. The experimental data were well described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model. The high values obtained for the maximum biosorption capacity (qmax: Cu(II) (0.52 mmol/g) > Zn(II) (0.41 mmol/g) > Co(II) (0.39 mmol/g) for G-AWB, and qmax: Cu(II) (1.78 mmol/g) > Zn(II) (1.72 mmol/g) > Co(II) (1.66 mmol/g) for R-AWB) show the potential use of these biosorbents to remove such technologically valuable metal ions from industrial wastewater. This possibility was tested using industrial wastewater samples obtained from the metal coating industry. The quantitative removal (>91%) of Zn(II), Cu(II), and Co(II) ions was obtained when their initial concentration was adjusted to 50 mg/L. In addition, the rapid and efficient desorption of these metal ions from loaded biosorbents by simple treatment with small volumes of HNO3 (10−1 mol/L) further emphasizes the possibility of their recovery and reuse in the technological circuit. The results included in this study indicate that algae wastes have the potential to be used in industrial effluent decontamination processes and open new perspectives for the implementation of circular economy principles.

Circular Economy in the Building Sector: Investigating Awareness, Attitudes, Barriers, and Enablers through a Case Study in Saudi Arabia

The adoption of circular economy (CE) holds significant potential to mitigate the challenges posed by the conventional linear economic model. The building sector in Saudi Arabia continues experiencing rapid growth, often marked by a consistent annual rise in the number of projects. The incorporation of CE principles into this expansion presents opportunities to optimize resource utilization, minimize waste generation, and enhance overall environmental sustainability. This study explores the current levels of awareness, perception, and implementation of CE principles among local building sector stakeholders and assesses the potential for CE expansion in the region. Additionally, it seeks to rank the identified barriers and enablers while exploring the interconnected relationships between such barriers. A literature review was conducted to explore the CE barriers and enablers. This was followed by an online survey which was conducted amongst 139 respondents from diverse stakeholder groups. A relative importance index (RII) was employed to rank the barriers and enablers, and the findings were subjected to statistical analysis using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). The outcomes of this study highlight a significant lack of awareness regarding CE principles among stakeholders, with a very low implementation rate. To break this inertia and encourage the adoption of CE practices, this study suggests the need for CE- supportive policy and legislation, and the provision of financial incentives.

Assessing circularity of wastewater treatment systems: A critical review of indicators

AbstractGlobal energy demand, water demand, and raw materials extraction are major challenges for society as population grows. While a traditional linear economy approach leads to depletion of finite resources, damage to the Earth's ecosystems, and adverse impacts on human health, a paradigm shift toward implementation of circular economy principles is paramount to the reversal of world resources' exhaustion. The wastewater, or “used water,” sector can contribute to offsetting resource scarcity challenges by adopting circular economy principles to recover and reintroduce recovered resources into the economy. Transitioning to a circular economy model requires monitoring and tracking progress via metrics in the form of indicators. In this paper, a bibliometric analysis followed by a systematic literature review was conducted on available circular economy indicators in the used water treatment sector. Over 200 indicators were categorized into three impact categories: environmental, social, and economic to identify gaps in the existing literature. Results showed that less than 50% of the available circularity indicators are applied in the used water sector and environmental indicators represent the highest percentage among the potential applicable indicators. Research gaps in the circular economy literature in relation to used water treatment systems were identified and future research directions discussed.

Implementation of Circular Economy Principles in Building Construction Waste

Building projects often generate significant amounts of waste. This happens because the building projects mostly adopts a linear economic model of “take, make, dispose of”, using materials to the construction of buildings and disposing them at the end of life. This linear economic model only focuses on human activities because the disposal of materials ultimately does not become a sustainable practice in the future. For this reason, an alternative is needed in reducing and processing the construction waste by implementing circular economy principles. This study aims to identify type of construction waste in building project, provide recommendations for handling it with circular economy principles, and calculating the cost savings. The method that used in this study are field observation and interview for collecting data. The result showed that steel reinforcement, ready-mix concrete, light brick, ceramic, multiplex, spun pile, and anchor can be handled with circular economy principles are reduce, reuse, recycle, recovery, and repair. The cost savings from handled it in project A, B, and C are Rp. 68.252.490,65, Rp. 84.182.684,96, and Rp. 31.794.238,51, respectively.

Sustainability and Prosperity in Unison: The UAE's Path to Ambitious Targets through Circular Economy and Responsible Practices

This article examines the United Arab Emirates (UAE) approach to the concept of circular economy to balance economic prosperity with sustainability. The UAE has set ambitious sustainability targets, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing the share of clean energy. The UAE has implemented various economic incentives to achieve these targets, such as carbon tax and subsidies for renewable energy investments. Business guidelines, such as the Emirates Green Building Council's rating system and Dubai Sustainable Industry Platform, have also been introduced to encourage sustainable practices among companies. The research shows the UAE's excellent approach to a circular economy has helped promote sustainable development and keep economic growth strong. The country's efforts have led to more industries using renewable energy and environmentally friendly practices. However, the study also identifies some challenges that need to be addressed, such as the need for more awareness and implementation of circular economy principles in some sectors. The research concludes that the UAE's approach to a circular economy is a good way to find a balance between economic growth and environmental protection. It shows how important ambitious goals, economic incentives, and business guidelines are for encouraging businesses and people to act sustainably. The study suggests that the UAE can continue to lead the way in the circular economy by addressing the challenges and promoting circular economy principles more widely

Drivers for the implementation of circular economy in the Nigerian AECO industry: a structural equation modelling approach

Purpose This study aims to investigate the drivers influencing the implementation of circular economy principles in the Nigerian architecture, engineering, construction and operation (AECO) industry across diverse regions of Nigeria. Design/methodology/approach A quantitative research approach was adopted, using a structured questionnaire distributed to AECO professionals across four selected regions (North Central, North West, South-South and South West) in Nigeria. The data were analysed using Kruskal–Wallis test and structural equation modelling (SEM). Findings The study findings show a robust consensus of opinions among the respondents across regions and professions. The SEM analysis establishes the significant influence of the hypothesized drivers, regulatory and institutional, supply chain collaboration, technological advancements, organizational support and business strategies on the successful implementation of circular economy principles in the Nigerian AECO industry. Research limitations/implications The study is limited to specific regions and professions within Nigeria. Further limitation is the quantitative orientation of this study, which collects data using only a questionnaire. Practical implications The findings imply that stakeholders can adopt a unified approach to promote circular economy principles in the AECO industry. By recognizing the common understanding of circular economy drivers, collaborative efforts can be streamlined to advance sustainability, resource efficiency and circularity in the industry. Originality/value This study contributes to the nascent field of circular economy implementation in the Nigerian AECO industry. It offers a unique perspective by exploring variations in stakeholder opinions, providing insights into the nuanced understanding of circular economy drivers.

Enhancing Business Performance through Circular Economy: A Comprehensive Mathematical Model and Statistical Analysis

In today’s dynamic and competitive free market, businesses strive to gain a distinct competitive advantage, enabling them to seize opportunities and overcome potential threats. Achieving and sustaining superior performance has become a fundamental objective for companies. Accordingly, the main objective and contribution of this research is to delve into the profound impact of circular economy practices, which are known to foster sustainability and resource efficiency, on financial performance—an essential metric for evaluating a company’s success. Through the development of a proposed mathematical model, we simulate and quantify the influence of circular economy practices on financial outcomes, capturing the intricate relationship between the two. Employing state-of-the-art optimization methods and statistical analysis, our analysis reveals that the implementation of circular economy principles significantly impacts financial performance, contributing to 15.7% of its variance. Interestingly, production diversity, while critical for corporate governance, does not exert a statistically significant influence on financial performance. Notably, although production diversity remains a pivotal aspect of effective corporate governance, our analysis indicates that it does not wield a statistically significant impact on financial performance. Moreover, the combined synergy of circular economy practices and financial performance unveils a noteworthy 24.8% variance in overall company performance, underscoring the intricate interdependence of these pivotal elements. By harnessing state-of-the-art modeling techniques and meticulous analysis, this research yields profound insights into the intricate interplay between circular economy practices and financial performance. This illumination empowers businesses to discern potential pathways for harnessing competitive advantages and nurturing sustainable growth in the dynamic tapestry of today’s business landscape.

Transitioning circular economy from policy to practice in Kenya

Policies are imperative in assessing how certain proposed actions or practices can be implemented. In the context of the circular economy, public policies have been influential in determining the way practices are adopted and implemented. In specific contexts, policies can be used to assess a country's preparedness to transition to the circular economy by examining how those that are formulated support the transition. This study examines Kenya's circular economy policy landscape by looking at the strides made by the country to embrace the concept and principles of the circular economy and focusing on the policies formulated so far. Using the thematic analysis approach, the study examines relevant circular economy laws, policies, and regulations to capture the initiatives the country has taken to embrace circular economy principles. The study's overall finding points to environmental sustainability, resource efficiency, sustainable economic development, and stakeholder engagement as the four primary policy areas shaping Kenya's transition to a circular economy. However, there persist certain obstacles to the effective implementation of circular economy principles. These challenges encompass the prevailing dominance of the government in the circular economy sector, which ought to be a collaborative endeavor involving both the private and public sectors. Furthermore, there is a scarcity of financing mechanisms to support circular economy initiatives, inadequate infrastructure to effectively implement circular economy practices, and a lack of capacity to propel progress in both the public and private sectors. Given that many of these challenges revolve around the financial aspect, the study recommends that the Kenyan government considers providing financial incentives to foster dynamism in harnessing the environmental and economic potential offered by the emerging circular economy.

Circularity Indicators as a Design Tool for Design and Construction Strategies in Architecture

This study addresses the challenges and barriers associated with the implementation of circular economy principles in architectural design and construction practices. It highlights the fragmented knowledge and lack of a unified approach to circular design as a major obstacle hindering the adoption of circularity. The existing frameworks for assessing circularity, such as the Material Circularity Indicator (MCI) protocol and the Level(s) assessment protocol, are applied to two projects with a high degree of deconstruction to understand their applicability in the architectural design process and identify their limitations. The study emphasises the significance of considering structural connectivity and circularity strategies during the concept-design stage, advocating for the incorporation of circularity at various scales beyond the microscale of materials. Furthermore, it emphasises the need for early implementation of Design for Disassembly (DfD) strategies on circularity scoring to enable meaningful comparisons of alternative designs using circularity metrics. The findings reveal the variability of circularity indicators based on the hierarchy of disassembly and highlights an early-stage design approach to deconstruction strategies to achieve circularity in architectural design. Overall, this study upscales the significance of a comprehensive and integrated approach to circularity in architectural design practices.

Between Fast and Sustainable Fashion: The Attitude of Young Lithuanian Designers to the Circular Economy

The textile and fashion industry is the second industry (after aviation) that pollutes the planet the most, and it uses natural and human resources excessively and irresponsibly. Fast fashion harms the environment. Fast fashion stands for low quality, low prices, constantly updated supplies, and high consumption of natural resources and chemicals. Nowadays, however, the evolution in the fashion industry from fast and unsustainable models to sustainability and a circular economy is firmly established. Fashion industry representatives are paying more and more attention to corporate social responsibility, business ethics, the implementation of circular economy principles, and the technological transition from linear production to a circular economy. The aim of this article is to evaluate the attitude of young Lithuanian designers towards the implementation of circular economy principles in the fashion industry. A problematic question is raised: how do young Lithuanian designers perceive sustainable fashion in the context of a circular economy? A qualitative semi-structured interview was used to collect data for the empirical study. The analysis has shown that the transition of the textile and fashion industry to a circular economy is a rather complex process that requires knowledge, significant financial investment in technological change, and greater consumer purchasing power in the production of products based on a circular economy. Moreover, new brands in the fashion industry do not always have enough information to start a business in the fashion industry based on a circular economy. A qualitative study conducted in Lithuania using the interview method showed that young Lithuanian fashion designers are very positive about sustainability solutions in the fashion industry and try to link their developing fashion brand with sustainability, but this is done fragmentarily rather than consistently. Young fashion designers state that they lack the in-depth knowledge and money to develop a brand in a circular economy. In conclusion, young Lithuanian fashion designers strive to create a sustainable fashion brand and link their development activities to a circular economy in a fragmentary way. Even after the research has been conducted, the question of how to get fast fashion manufacturers to produce sustainable fashion in Lithuania remains open.

IMPLEMENTATION OF THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY MODEL IN THE AGRICULTURAL SECTOR OF UKRAINE

The urgency of studying the issues of the development of the circular economy in the agro-industrial complex is caused by the demand for national and international food security, the importance of preserving the environment in conditions of irrational environmental management, the need to harmonise the economic, ecological and social spheres of human activity involved in the production, sale and consumption of agricultural products. The purpose of the study is to justify a comprehensive approach to the implementation of the circular economy model in the agro-industrial complex, in the context of ensuring food independence, economic security of the country and achieving the goals of sustainable development. In the course of the research the general scientific methods of analysis and synthesis, statistical methods (comparison, analysis of absolute and relative values) and graphical methods were used in the evaluation of indicators of organic waste management of agricultural production, methods of a systematic approach – to justify a set of priority measures in the process of implementation of the model of circular economy in the agro-industrial complex. The information base for the research: legislative and regulatory acts; official materials of the State Statistical Service of Ukraine, the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine. Based on the results of the research, a comprehensive approach to the implementation of the principles of circular economy in the agro-industrial complex was formed. The key factor is an effective public policy capable of ensuring high rates of development of innovative resource-saving technologies and the introduction of circular business models. State activity includes the development of tax, credit and pricing policies to stimulate the implementation of circular economy principles. It is important to develop and approve strategic plans, legislative and regulatory acts that regulate activities in the field of circular economy and are adapted to the standards and norms of the legislation of the European Union. The activities of agricultural enterprises should be directed towards cooperation with scientific and educational institutions in order to solve the problems of introducing innovations and improving the qualifications of employees, technical and technological modernisation, establishing partnership relations with investors, raw material suppliers and local self-government bodies. Ultimately, the implementation of these measures will contribute to the growth of the competitiveness of the domestic agricultural sector, the growth of investment attractiveness and the preservation of the environment.
